How I brought emojis to life in a side project

A little over 8 months ago, I released a concept project called "Journaler." It was a daily journaling app that also served as a mood tracker. This was a deeply personal project because it felt like I was designing something for myself, especially since, during the 2020 pandemic, I fell into a dark place with anxiety.

I animated a bunch of emojis (as you can see here).
Here’s a quick breakdown of how I animated them:

  • I first created them all using Figma
  • I mapped the first, middle, and final frames every
  • I created an After Effects file with a 4-second loop

I think After Effects is something that every designer should learn.
